Several bystanders on their lunchtime walks stopped to watch as first the tree’s branches were removed, followed by the trunk.
The tree was a large liquid amber, about 60 years old.
One of its large branches broke in a storm last week and following an assessment, Orange City Council staff found it was suffering from decay and could not be saved.
Given the ground was quite wet after the large storm, crews had to wait a few days for it to dry before heavy machinery could be brought into the park to remove the tree.
Crews were back on site on Wednesday morning to continue the mammoth task of removing the main tree and debris.
