Where were you born? I was born here in Orange.
Hobbies? I’m a painter.
What did you want to be when you were little? Like every boy I wanted to be a fireman.
Where do you work now and how long have you been there? Hansen Optometrists in Orange and Parkes. I am celebrating this year being in practice for 40 years.
What is your job title? Optometrist, a behavioural optometrist, children’s vision.
What is your job description? My main role is examining eyes and detecting the best visual options for people who have vision problems.
What other jobs have you had? During my university days in the holidays I worked in an abattoir, I was a groundsman up at Kinross and cherry picking.
What training have you had? In my day it was four years’ full time study.
Why did you choose this job? I used to come into my father’s practice. I really liked what was happening there.
What is the best thing about your job? It’s the people. I do a lot of children’s vision. You change their life if a child has an eye problem.
What is the worst thing about your job? Commercially it has changed. It is much more commercially competitive now.
Where do you see yourself in five years? Hansen Optometrists is going strong after 135 years and we’ll still be strong in five years.
What advice would you give someone interested in this job as a career? It’s a great career particularly for females. You can have a family and return to your career.
