Captain cranky – Allan Border was the first Australian skipper to be given that handle, and it’s a persona Centrals’ Daryl Kennewell is considering channelling after his side broke its Orange District Cricket Association duck last weekend.

“Well, I gave the boys a rev-up against Kinross and we ended up tying that game. Then I gave them a rev-up after CYMS thrashed us last Friday night, and we beat them the next day. Maybe I do need to just be cranky all the time,” he laughed.
Centrals face Cavaliers in Saturday’s final round before the Christmas break which, in a way, is coming at the absolute worst time for Kennewell and his troops.
“I guess it is in a way, we’ve just had a win and we’ve got a chance to build a bit of momentum this weekend, then we’ll have a long break because we’ve got the bye first round back,” Centrals’ skipper said.
“But I guess at the same time, maybe having a break to freshen up before ripping in after Christmas might be a good thing too.
“I guess we’ll see, but first thing’s first and that’s Cavaliers this weekend.”
Kennewell said he’s confident his troops can pick up a second straight victory, but confirmed they’ll have to do it without wily seamer Zac Reimer.
“He has a stress fracture in his heel,” Kennewell lamented.
“He’s been pretty upbeat about it but he’ll obviously be out for a while, there’s not much he can do about it and he does leave a hole but we’re still putting a good side on the paddock and I’m confident we can get the job done.”
The red and blacks need to continue improving the bat, to get that job done.
“It’s still about application,” Kennewell said.
“Even in last weekend’s win we had a bit of a mini-collapse but thankfully some guys at the top got some runs, which made it a whole lot easier when we lost a couple of quick ones.”
Centrals face the Matt Corben-led Cavaliers at Wade Park on Saturday, play starts at 1pm.
