Volunteers had to clean up the mess on Monday morning as the charity called on people not to dump unusable items in the bins.

Volunteer Roger Anderson said large amounts of clothing and items had been left at the McNamara Street site.

“One bag just had dirty children’s nappies in it,” he said.

“The stink just goes through it all.”

Lukas Rajnoch, the acting executive officer of Vinnies’ Bathurst Central Council, which covers Orange, said the dumping cost the charity.

“Sadly when we receive donations that are poor quality, broken or cannot be accepted for safety reasons we must then dispose of these,” he said.

“This places extra pressure on our volunteers and costs money that would otherwise be directed to our services and assisting people in the community.”

Mr Rajnoch said Vinnies was pleased to receive new and used items in excellent condition including clothes and books for Christmas.

“We encourage people to give donations that they would also be happy to donate to a friend,” he said.

However, he said the charity did not take mattresses and did not want furniture left at the site.

“We do not accept mattresses for safety and hygiene reasons, electrical appliances for legal and safety reasons and anything that is governed by safety standards, including cots, baby seats, swimming aids and underwater toys.

“Anything that is broken, ripped or dirty also cannot be sold or given to others.”

He said people donating furniture should call 6360 1609 to arrange a pick up.
