Shortly before 2.30pm on Saturday a B-double prime mover carrying a mixed freight load was travelling south on the Newell Highway at Tooraweenah, north-east of Gilgandra.
Initial inquiries suggest the truck veered to the incorrect side of the highway before it left the road and travelled down a steep embankment into a paddock.
The driver, believed to be a 34-year-old man, died at the scene.
Police from Orana Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene.
Orana Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Dan Skelly said traffic in the area was disrupted for several hours.
“Investigations into the cause of the accident have commenced and no outcome has been reached at this stage,” Insp Skelly said.
The Newell Highway was closed for several hours while police investigated.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page www.nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
