It’s been a problem at the Millthorpe Markets for years, but thanks to the recent upgrade of the mobile tower in Millthorpe, the bi-annual overload of the mobile phone network in the village won’t be an issue on Sunday.

During previous markets the ten-fold increase in the village’s population would see eftpos terminals laying stagnant, and leave stallholders and shoppers fuming in frustration as important sales were missed.
The upgrade was completed and switched on on November 17, and Telstra Area General Manager, Mike Marom said that testing was now under way so that the system was up and ready for the markets.
“We really understand just how important the markets are for the Millthorpe community and I’m really pleased to see that the upgrade has been successfully completed beforehand,” he said.
For market manager Rachel Booth, who has been in constant consultation with Telstra regarding the upgrade, the news was most welcome.
“We’re looking at another big market this year and to have the tower ready for it will mean so much for the stallholders and the visitors,” she said.
Mr Marom said that the 4GX system would actually operate in conjunction with the 3G, further enhancing the capacity of the network.
“Those on 4G capable phones will be using the new 4GX system that is not only faster but has greater capacity for more data,” he said.
“Those on 3G only phones will be using the 3G system and not impacting on the 4GX at all.”
The markets will be held at Millthorpe Public School on Sunday between 8.30am and 3pm.
