Ephriam had been well backed from fourteens into $7 but missed the jump slightly and was caught well back one out from the rails for the majority of the Rigid Maiden Plate (1280 metres), forcing Jenkinson to push the gelding right to the outside with 300 to go, to find a lane in the straight.
They found that lane and even though, in terms of saluting, they had too far too much to do to catch eventual winner Adaboycharlie ($5) the duo wound up in the straight to finish just half-a-length from second-finisher Sega Dancer ($26).
Adaboycharlie’s win was actually the second on the trot for Warwick Farm’s Bruce Cross and Andrew Banks, the trainer-jockey duo won the first on Friday as well.
It was also a first-up win for the four-year-old gelding, coming off a 44-week spell after running a debut ninth at Canberra in January.
“We’d given him plenty of time off but we came here today expecting this, he’s a pretty smart,” Cross said.
“He’s a horse that the owners have been very patient with, we had his half-brother two years ago and he gave me four starts for three wins before we sold him to Hong Kong, and we do like this horse too. He’s a nice horse.”
Adaboycharlie jumped perfectly before sitting back slightly and allowing Sega Dancer to set the early pace, the latter shot to a length-and-a-half lead at the 700 mark too.
At that stage Ephriam was five-and-a-half lengths back in eighth.
Sega Dancer still led into the straight but Adaboycharle had loomed ominously and then edged ahead with 250 to go, with Mud Wasp ($19) sitting third. That
Cross’ gelding streaked away from there to win by five lengths as Ephriam made up some serious ground on Sega Dancer to finish third.
