Representations will be made on the station at East Fork for the western bound line to make it more welcoming and user friendly. It is a shame to see this historic site and range of buildings and infrastructure basically disintegrating. Surely there are community uses for this site?
I have the opportunity to visit a couple of ministers this week at Parliament, including local government minister Gabrielle Upton. Hopefully in the coming weeks I will be able to make some comment on the discussions and outcomes.
This week a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Orange City Council and our New Zealand Sister City Timaru. We have the economic development officer from Timaru visiting.
It was exciting to receive of over $110,000 of funding for Orange junior soccer. The money was presented by parliamentary secretary Rick Colless. A special thanks to Member for Orange Philip Donato who helped the clubs with their applications.
OUT AND ABOUT AT GAMES AND EVENTS
ON Saturday I attended the opening of the 41st edition of the Orange Eight Day Games. Whilst it was wet, I welcomed the opportunity to open this great event, which has been run for all of those years by a committee of volunteers. Mr Donato opened the first event, competing in the commando course and acquitted himself admirably. A great week of sporting activities and comradeship.
This coming weekend will also see a new event for Orange: Classic Cars, Food and Wine, organised by the Orange Daybreak Rotary. I am looking forward to the display of cars at the old Bunnings store and going for a spin in one of the classic vehicles.
PATS ON THE BACK ARE WELL DESERVED
THE Orange Campdraft was a huge success, with a very busy schedule over three days and over 1400 individual campdrafting runs conducted. The dinner on the Saturday had over 200 attendees, and was only limited by the size of the venue at the Orange Showgrounds, which highlighted the need for kitchen and toilet facilities in the new pavilion. A big thank you to the organising group and congratulations on the improved drafting arena.
NAIDOC Week activities were all well attended, and the march and opening activities in Robertson Park saw record numbers. After putting out the challenge to all schools and our State and Federal members to be able to recite the Welcome to Country in Wiradjuri by NAIDOC Week next year I have already commenced by putting the Wiradjuri language App on my phone.
Last weekend a regional mountain biking competition was held in Orange, and next weekend will see even a bigger event attracting competitors from across the nation. This highlights the great opportunity that exists for our region to development a world-class facility at the Mount Canobolas-Lake Canobolas precinct. This could generate employment and inject untold economic benefits for the region. I will be lobbying for government support in my visit to parliament this week.
Ross Hill Wines opened the extension to their winery recently with facilities to have cooking classes using produce from the region. A State Government grant was forthcoming to establish the new venture, which highlights the significance of our region in the food and wine scene.
We also saw the launch of the Orange Theatre Company season with over 300 attendees enjoying a glimpse of the outstanding array of performances that will be available at our wonderful Orange Civic Theatre. Subscriptions to the theatre season are available, and is a great way to ensure your seats and obtain discounts.
The launch of the girls academy at Canobolas Rural Technology High School is a successful program championed by ex-Australian Olympic basketballer Ricky Grace.
It was great to see over 30 students from various Orange schools doing their ‘Schoolies’ in Nepal under the mentorship of Orange Daybreak Rotary
Rememberance Day was well attended and again well chaired by Orange Christian School. Next year will mark 100 years since the end of WWI and will fall on a Sunday. I am anticipating something special.
A special mention of Orange City Councillor Tony Mileto who was recently the recipient Orange Ex-Services’ Club’s Sporting Club Person of the Year. Congratulations for many years of voluntary work.
