CCTV surveillance and better lighting could be on the cards for the Glenroi Community Centre in Garema Road, but the Glenroi Community Group also wants residents to attend a meeting on Monday night to identify more projects for the area.

The group formed in 2014 and has a core membership of 12, which has run several family days and barbecues, in addition to working with Orange City Council and Housing Plus to secure a basketball court for Edye Park.
Secretary Joe Maric said it had achieved some great results and had its sights set on more, supporting the council in its application for Safer Communities funding for improved lighting and CCTV at the community centre and lighting for Edye Park.
“It will make a big difference,” he said.
“There was some damage done by fire around the community centre and a lot of people were very shocked to see that happen.”
Although Glenroi Oval already has a skate park, Mr Maric hoped the work at the community centre would lead to a second in the vicinity.
“It’s going to work better than what we have at the moment,” he said.
“Parents tell us that they don’t like their kids going to the one at Glenroi Oval because it’s out of sight,” he said.
“It’s time to start building this type of infrastructure closer to the road and closer to residences.”
He said lighting around the basketball court, unveiled in May, would also help surveillance.
“The police have always said it’s really dark so it would really help them,” he said.
“Once that’s done, we can really start thinking about beautifying the place.”
However, Mr Maric said more volunteers from the Glenroi community were necessary to expand the group’s activities and he hoped to work with Glenroi Heights Public School in particular.
“We’re talking to Country Rugby to run some events, but we’d need 20 volunteers at least from a supervision point of view,” he said.
In partnership with the RSPCA, the group has also held microchipping sessions for dogs and cats and Mr Maric said more volunteers would ease pressure on the regulars.
Monday’s meeting will be held at the Glenroi Community Centre on Garema Road from 6pm, with everyone welcome.
Glenroi Heights Public School relieving principal Stewart Vidler will attend.
