The summer intensive program offers a range of subjects including microbiology, physiology, pathophysiology, human genetics and advanced research methods in a compressed nine week term.
Doctor Peter Anderson, subject coordinator for the introductory microbiology subject, said there are lots of benefits to studying over summer.
“Fast-track subjects are an opportunity for someone who is not a university student to give university a go, or for a current student at CSU or another university to catch up on a subject or focus on a single subject now to get ahead for the following semester.”
“In microbiology, students learn about the seven different types of microbes which are bacteria archaea, protozoa, fungi, algae, parasites and viruses. These are so small they have to be examined under the microscope.
“We will also look at impacts on health, the environment and agriculture, including the role of microbes in making bread, yoghurt, cheese and wines.”
Some of the summer intensive subjects are taught entirely online while others bring students together on campus for up to five days
Dr Anderson said a four day ‘hands-on and fun residential school’ to be held at the end of January is an essential part of the microbiology course.
