Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of James Uhr, who was found at the rear of a property in Coalcliff, in Wollongong's northern suburbs, on Wednesday night.
Police allege that, on Wednesday morning, the 27-year-old stole a Ford utility from a petrol station in Cringila and rammed a number of vehicles in North Wollongong, before driving to his mother's house in Balgownie.
Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth said Mr Uhr's mother tried to escape from him in her car but he chased her down the street and rammed her car off the road, before assaulting her, leaving her with serious facial injuries.
Mr Uhr then fled in a car owned by a bystander.
On Wednesday, Detective Inspector Ainsworth said he had viewed footage of the incident.
"His manner of driving, to chase his mother down in the car and ram her, his efforts and actions at North Wollongong prior to that, it was lucky that only the mother was injured," Inspector Ainsworth said.
"It's quite sickening actually and obviously quite horrific."
Paramedics treated Mr Uhr's 55-year-old mother before taking her to Wollongong Hospital where she is due to undergo surgery.
On Wednesday, police launched an appeal to try to find Mr Uhr.
A Coalcliff resident found his body in the rear of a house about 7.15pm.
Police said a vehicle stolen earlier in the day was found a short distance away and has been seized for forensic examination.
