Recent Australian research indicated "a mismatch between perception about ageing and reality”.
Like many older people, I believe in keeping mentally and physically active, and I will continue to contribute to the community as a volunteer, as I have throughout my working life.
Unfortunately, the research shows that older people (over 50) who want to work, find it very difficult to gain employment.
It's worth remembering that more than 90 per cent of older Australians live independently, and not in a nursing home.
In my case, as I head towards the age of 80, I'm fairly certain that no aged-care facility would take me.
When I sign letters to family and friends, I usually write in brackets: "Over the hill and gathering speed”.
Thank goodness for a life-long sense of humour!
