The NSWPSSA event will begin on Wednesday and OPS’ seven-strong contingent will take to the track and field eyeing off medals at a state level.
The boys’ 11-13 four-by-100 meter relay team – Rocco Mileto, Kaylem Reid, Ben Taylor, Harrison Reyer –heads to Homebush as the fastest qualifier from Western.
While Sam Hill, Ava Cole and Sadie Keegan are participating in individual events, the latter coming off a record breaking discus through at a Western level to progress through to state.
Black says her school’s athletics team is about to make a giant leap up in competition – one she’s confident the students are capable of making.
“The level of competition will be extremely high,” Black said.
“We have a boys’ senior relay team that will be attending, they’ve done really well.”
Cole will run in the 100m sprint while Keegan is a force to be reckoned with in the discus and shot put.
She won both events, throwing the shot put 8.98m and the discus 24.14m – breaking the previous discus record by more than three metres in the girls’ 11 years division.
While Cole clocked 15.46 seconds in the 100m dash in her girls’ 10 years race to place first, and Hill came third with 16.23s in the boys’ eight years 100m sprint.
The boys’ relay team stopped the clock at 56.68s in its race to win gold – just 0.07s ahead of Eglinton Public School’s team from Bathurst.
“They’ve got the potential to do well, but it’s the experience of getting this far,” Black added.
“We’ve not had a representation this large before … the kids have been fabulous.”
She added the boys have worked hard on the one aspect of a relay that can go horribly wrong.
“We’ve done a lot of practice with our baton changes,” Black smiled.
Competition starts on Wednesday morning at Homebush.
