Cr Nugent will put forward a motion at Tuesday’s meeting asking the council’s heritage adviser to prepare a report assessing the 1850s building to test whether it could be identified as an individual heritage item.
“There was a comment in the report assessing the development application [to refurbish the building an add an extension] that it’s not clear why it’s not listed,” he said.
“It’s a significant building in Orange’s history and it’s in a very significant location.”
Cr Nugent said while it was not under imminent threat, with developer Jim Saran now approved to restore many of its past features and convert it to office space, a listing would protect the building for years to come.
“I would like to see that maintained and carried forward,” he said.
