Just as it did against the Warriors an outstanding effort with the ball set up the young students’ win over the maroons, from Will Luelf and Cam Rasmussen in particular.
Faced with restricting the likes of Stu Middleton, Cam Laird and Richie Venner, Leulf (3-30) and Rasmussen (3-33) combined to snare six of Cavaliers’ 10 wickets, conceding just 63 runs between them.
While Middleton (30), Laird (42) and Venner (41 not out) still managed to do the bulk of the damage Luelf, Rasmussen and co strangled the remainder of the Cavaliers outfit, so much so no one else cracked double figures as the maroons were kept to 9-164 from their 40 overs.
Completing a man-of-the-match showing, Luelf notched a half-ton as his side successfully chased for the loss of just five wickets.
Luelf (52) and Andy Litchfield (21) kicked the chase off with a 46-run opening stand, before Sam Ridley (35 not out) and Jock Medway (31) finished the five-wicket win off with more more than four overs in hand.
CYMS also claimed a second victory in as many weeks, a nervy, two-run win over Centrals.
The green and golds slumped to 9-76 after Roshan Eiseman (3-28) ran through their top order, before Mitchell Beasley (12 not out) and Nick Rosser (25) put together what was ultimately a match-winning, 38-run 10th wicket stand.
Chasing 115 for victory Centrals were well on track at 3-65, but could only limp to 112 after 40 overs, despite still having four wickets in the sheds.
Kyle Nonnenmacher (40 not out) was the red and blacks’ best with the bat, Jarrod Urza (3-27), Kevin Costa (1-19), Angus Wilson (1-19) and Adam Smith (1-35) bowling beautifully as CYMS defended a small total.
Orange City bounced back from its first-up loss to Kinross, easily accounting for Waratahs on the back of strong showings from Joey Kay and Jackson Coote.
Kay smashed 64, linking well with Shaun Churchill (41) and Darren Barrett (53 not out), to help the Warriors post 3-188, before Coote posted game-best figures of 3-9 as Waratahs managed just 126 in reply.
Andrew Rutledge (2-7) also took multiple scalps for Orange City.
Cavaliers held on to top spot in third grade, bouncing back from last weekend’s season-opening loss with a win over Kinross.
The maroons routed the students, skittling them for just 64 and running that down in just 17 overs with nine wickets in hand, while Waratahs (8-95) took care of Orange City (82).
CYMS (8-145) held off Kinross (143) in Saturday’s only Centenary Cup clash, and did the same to Centrals Wanderers in fourth grade.
Ben Wright’s 4-23 ensured Centrals Wanderers posted just 84, before Jake Kopp top scored with 38 to lead CYMS home by two wickets.
