The man was stopped on Bathurst Road at 4.20pm on Tuesday for random breath and drug tests.
After returning a positive drug test the man and his car were searched and a plastic bag of white powder, believed to be amphetamine, was located.
Canobolas Local Area Command duty officer Chief Inspector Dave Harvey said the white powder would be tested by laboratory technicians.
Chief Inspector Harvey said detectives are making further inquiries about other items found in the car.
The man was charged with possessing prohibited drugs and will face Orange Local Court on December 12.
