In recent years there has been a noticeable spike in the number of vehicle thefts across the Canobolas Local Area Command (LAC).
Often the cars are broken into and stolen in the middle of the night, with the thieves driving them to a remote location before setting them alight.
Canobolas LAC Acting Crime Manager Andrew McLean said his officers had noticed an increasing number of incidents where Mazda Bravos and Ford Couriers were taken.
He said owners of those makes should be especially vigilant in securing their vehicles overnight.
“The theft of motor vehicles and other property offences are always a concern for police,” Detective McLean said.
“We have noticed an increase of motor vehicle theft where the type of vehicles targeted include Mazda Bravos and Ford Couriers.
“We are asking that members of the community, particularly those that own these types of vehicles, take all appropriate precautions in securing their vehicles, particularly of an evening.”
Detective McLean said the Crime Proactive Property Investigation Team (CPPIT) from the LAC are currently conducting operations which target this type of crime.
He outlined some basic measures car owners should take to deter potential thieves, including parking vehicles in closed and locked garages or in driveways with other vehicles blocking exit routes.
“We also ask the community to be vigilant,” detective McLean said.
“If they see something they believe is suspicious, do not hesitate to contact local police, triple-0 or Crime Stoppers with any information.”
