Joanne McRae’s name was drawn out of the box after she tied six votes-all with fellow councillor Glenn Taylor.
Councillors Kevin Duffy, Scott Munro, Tony Mileto and Jason Hamling also nominated and were excluded in a series of votes, which took about half an hour.
Cr McRae said she felt excited and hoped to set an example other women could aspire to.
