If you have no idea what those words mean, you can head to the Great Marbles Classic to find out, and raise money for a worthy cause into the bargain.
To be held on the carpet in Orange Ex-Services’ Club’s Coral Sea Room on Friday, November 3, the classic will be played by teams of two, men or women or a mix, and each will get at least two games.
The event is being promoted by the Gnoo Blas Classic Car Club to raise money towards buying much-needed equipment for Orange Hospital to diagnose prostate cancer.
It’s called Trans Perineal Grid Guided Biopsy and will cost around $170,000, of which thousands has already been raised by Lynn Ward, one of the car club’s members.
Gnoo Blas Club president Denis Gregory said the marbles night was popular when the club last ran it about six years ago, and with help from Canobolas Lions Club will bring it back to help get the valuable diagnostic equipment for the hospital.
“The night unearths lots of talent that’s been dormant for years for players, and although there’s usually a few sore backs and knees, it’s always a huge success,” he said.
“We’re looking at around 100 or more players and hope that business houses, motor dealers, service clubs, sporting clubs and other organisations will enter a team and take part.”
The rules are simple. It will be ‘big ring’ marked on carpet with 21 marbles, supplied by the organisers, in the centre.
Players can use their own taws provided they’re no larger than 22 millimetres in diameter.
The first team to knock out 11 marbles is the winner. If that hasn’t happened within 15 minutes, the winner will be the next team to knock a marble out.
