The annual trek, now in its sixth year, has currently raised over $70,000 for Little Wings, a charity that helps transport rural children from regional areas to major hospitals in Sydney and Newcastle.
Each tractor is a team, gaining sponsorship for their ride, and 20 teams are registered to take part in the weekend’s events, with Central West Charity Tractor Trek Group Director Geoff Porter saying “it was getting competitive” between teams trying to raise the most money.
Mr Porter said the idea came from New Zealand, where one of the club’s now-members saw it done on South Island.
“It’s a great event,” he said.
This year’s event will be different from the last few years’, with the tractors starting and ending both days in Orange and a charity dinner held at the Orange City Bowling Club on Saturday night.
“We’ll head out to Cargo on the first day and then down towards Milthorpe on the Sunday,” Mr Porter said.
This year is the first year the trek will operate as its own charity.
Mr Porter said gaining charity status meant they had more scope to plan their own event, and ensure “every cent possible” could go towards the charity they chose.
