As the Australian marriage law postal survey begins arriving in mailboxes, a group of Orange students are doing their bit to promote the ‘Yes’ campaign.
Five Kinross Wolaroi Year 10 girls are hosting a mini-rally in Robertson Park on Friday to encourage people to take part in the survey.
Parent Meg Ward said it was wonderful to see the girls standing up for what they believe in.
“Polls have been showing that a majority of Australians support marriage equality but that, because it doesn’t affect them, many of those people probably won’t bother to return their survey forms,” Mrs Ward said.
“The girls came up with the idea for this little rally to let people know that it does matter to them and many of their friends, and to ask people to please vote.”
Mrs Ward said the girls were not looking to change people’s minds.
“Ideally they want people to vote ‘yes’, but they’re not actually trying to change anyone’s mind,” she said.
“If people have strong personal reasons for voting ‘no’, the girls respect that.
The girls will meet up with fellow students, friends, family and supporters in Robertson Park from 5pm.
