The irony in such a statement is the Sellers knows full well Oberon’s success in 2017 can be brought back to one figure – Branighan.
“To be honest, it’s Branighan,” Sellers says when asked what has jolted the Tigers into action during the Group 10 finals.
The Tigers lost 50-4 to Panthers in the final round, then beat the men in black twice in three weeks to make Sunday’s grand final against CYMS.
Branighan returned from a thumb injury in the opening week of the finals, helping the Tigers to a 20-16 win over Panthers before again triumphing 24-12 in last week’s preliminary final.
“He’s got that bit of experience, a bit of polish … we’ve been competitive with CYMS and Panthers, but we lacked that polish when he wasn’t there,” Sellers said.
The Oberon junior hasn’t played in a grand final for the Tigers since 2007, when he Blake Fitzpatrick and Tyler Hughes all lined up for the club’s under 15s.
Sellers, now 25, says the town of Oberon has been buzzing this week.
“It is, I’ve seen nothing like this,” he said.
“It’s definitely a great feeling. A lot of years without a great deal of success. We’ve stuck to it and here we are.”
But the Tigers are far from being content after making the premier league grand final.
“We’re not there to make up the numbers. We want to win it,” Sellers added.
“We’ve beaten Panthers twice, that gives us confidence.”
