After a 32-4 grand final win, Bloomfield Tigers’ under 14s coach Mark Waters is right on the money.
The Tigers raced to an emphatic grand final win over Lithgow on Saturday at Wade Park, the Bloomfield boys clearly determined to reverse the 24-16 result the Storm took home in this year’s major semi-finals at Blayney.
“It was a bit of an upset,” Waters concedes of the semi-final loss.
“Winning is never easy, this side we played is a pretty good side. But we’re happy for the win … we had a bit of a point to prove today and I think we did that.”
Bloomfield open the scoring thanks to an incising run from fullback Jake Cole. Dylan Ryan kicked the goal to shoot the Tigers out to a 6-0 lead.
That lead was then extended after a powerhouse run from lock Alec Mokaraka – he busted several would-be Lithgow tackles on his way to the line.
Ryan again nailed the conversion from a tricky position to the right of the uprights, and at 12-0 you got the feeling Bloomfield would take some serious beating from such a position.
Lithgow hit back right on the stroke of half-time, going some of the way to pegging back the Tigers’ advantage with a 12-4 scoreline at the break.
But that was as close as Lithgow would get.
Bloomfield capatilised on a Storm error early in the second period, centre Jack Aveyaro on the end of a sweeping backline movement to score in the corner to bump the score to 16-4.
The Orange club then scored again immediately after to take that lead to 22-4 – Ryan nailing the conversion attempt from the chalk to essentially wrap up the title. A late double to man of the match Caleb Tamatea icing on the cake.
“They’re a mobile side. I’m pretty happy with the cattle we’ve got,” Waters added.
