Mr Nixon said once first responders like police, paramedics and firefighters had done their job, there needed to be help for the people who are often left alone.
His daughter Aria took her own life in 2010 and his son Joshua did the same in 2016.
Mr Nixon wants to ensure the tragedy doesn’t happen to others.
The foundation’s key service is providing peer support to people who have suicidal thoughts.
Mr Nixon has already been offering peer support to people in Orange, including supporting people in court.
He spent five days with a man whose relationship had broken down through domestic violence and started having suicidal thoughts.
Mr Nixon said the man had no where to go, no money, and was living in bushland for a few days.
“He felt hopelessness and loneliness and thought there was something wrong with him,” he said.
Mr Nixon said his work with the man was about taking the focus off the immediate problem, and looking to the future.
He said helping people focus on positive aspects of their lives, including family, friends, employment and sport, was an important strategy.
“Our information is most people who have ideas of suicide, don’t have a mental health issue,” Mr Nixon said.
“A recent study from Griffith University of 4000 suicides found that 70 per cent were due to relationship breakdowns.”
Mr Nixon is also working with New Zealander Lou Hutchinson who is preparing to launch the Te Aria Foundation across the Tasman Sea.
“I connected with Robert through social media and I’ve spent the last few years advocating for change in New Zealand,” she said.
World Suicide Prevention Day is on September 10 and from 10am at Robertson Park, Mr Nixon wants to start the city’s first suicide prevention plan and people can learn the QPR Institute’s mental health first aid.
