The Standing with Piper concert was organised for Piper Barnes by Ruth Thompson from the Early Years Music School and parents from Piper’s mother, Ashley Barnes’ mother’s group.
The event was held so Piper’s family can complete the purchase a $3300 Jenx Monkey Stander so she can learn to stand.
Two-year-old Piper has infantile spasms, a severe form of epilepsy that has resulted in developmental delays, although she can now sit, she is non-verbal and cannot walk yet.
Mrs Barnes said Piper will be strapped in the stander for support while her legs, back, neck and core get stronger.
She said the equipment was already part paid for, but she was delighted the $2730 raised on the day would enable them to complete the purchase.
Remaining funds would go into a bank account for future medical and equipment expenses.
Mrs Barnes was delighted that about 170 people attended the concert that featured a range of modern and traditional children’s songs, which Piper enjoyed with her family.
There were also stalls selling children’s clothes, cakes and slices, popcorn and there was a barbecue.
“It was a great turn out, lot of people came to buy tickets at the door as well [as pre-booking], which was really really nice, all the kids got involved in the concert and had lots of fun,” Mrs Barnes said.
“I was surprised we were supported by the number of people who came to show support for Piper, it was very lovely.”
