West Wyalong can’t force its way into the GrainCorp Cup Southern Division semi-finals, but the Weevils are gunning to end their 2017 campaign on a high in this weekend’s last regular season round against Cootamundra, which doubles as the club’s annual ladies day.

A huge occasion, an Old Boys game will complement the regular men’s and women’s sevens fixtures before a massive night full of auctions, a monster raffle and a big-screen broadcast of the Bledisloe Cup.
All the proceeds will go straight to Charlie Duncan and his family, the Weevils gun suffered an awful welding accident and has been in and out of hospital in Sydney since with doctors trying to save his eyesight.
Saturday’s fundraiser is the latest of several the Weevils have hosted since Duncan’s accident, the entire town rallying behind all the events so far.
While it marks the end of the Weevils’ campaign – the side is fifth with four wins from 13 starts, unable to make the final four – the ladies day celebration will, appropriately, act as a launching pad for the women’s sevens side’s assault on the finals.
West Wyalong’s women – the Redbacks – charged to this year’s minor premiership, winning all but two of their games so far this winter.
Led by four of Central West’s NSW Country Championship-winning stars – Sharnah Stevens, Amanda Bergin, Brodie Ford and Mandy Scott – the Redbacks have been superb all season and on top of that minor title boast the best attacking and defensive records in the league.
The Redbacks have scored 338 points so far this season – a whopping 141 more than second-placed Temora – and conceded a miserly 133.
The Old Boys game kicks off at 3pm before the women’s sevens at 3pm, with the men’s side kicking off at 3.30pm.
All three games are at West Wyalong Rugby Ground.
