Goldminers are still on a high from their State League women’s division one grand final overtime victory over Coffs Harbour Suns on Sunday, while the men’s Youth League division two boys are holding their heads high after going down to a red hot Newcastle Hunters side in their decider.
Along with the great results for both senior teams, at least one side in every Western Junior League age group made it through to their finals.
Winning women’s State League coach Paul Masters is hopeful the strong senior results encourage Bathurst’s juniors to stay in the game.
“From the weekend’s results Newcastle and Bathurst were the only country winners, so hopefully we see more kids playing basketball in the future to keep those results coming,” he said.
“The performance from the boys was amazing. The semi-final win against Illawarra, with just seven boys going up against 10 or so, was great. They have Matt Gray for the semi and then Will Cranston for the final, so they put in a big effort.
“Hopefully both the boys and the girls teams can get as many players back as possible for next year.
“We also started the ‘I’m A Girl’ program this year, which is a great initiative aimed at getting more girls playing basketball and getting active.”
