Power has been restored to more than 3000 homes and businesses in south-eastern Sydney after a fire broke out in an electrical substation in Matraville on Monday, causing a blackout.

Firefighters contained the fire, which engulfed the station on Messines Place just after 3pm.
About 20 people in a neighbouring unit block were evacuated.

Ausgrid restored power to about 3200 customers in the Matraville, Chifley, Malabar, Maroubra, Mayfield and Botany areas just after 7pm.
The energy provider said they had to wait for the all clear from fire fighters before they could start repair.
The fire also cut power to a number of traffic lights in the area, including intersections on Anzac Parade.
