Glenroi Community Action Group president Melissa Hatton said it would give children a place to go.
“It gives a sense of belonging,” she said.
Group member Joe Maric said discussions had been held with the basketball association to hold after-school clinics for children and it was also hoped a barbecue area and shelter could be added.
Mayor John Davis said it was a council and community responsibility to maintain.
“People can be more confident about their kids playing here rather than in an alleyway,” he said.
The $60,000 project was funded by a $50,000 state grant secured by Housing Plus and $10,000 from Orange City Council.
