I was reminded of them when my five-year-old marched with his school on Anzac Day for the first time, where we now live in Albury.
Back in 2013 we lived in Orange. I took these pictures of this very smart, very proud, but very modest gentleman.
My wife is Aussie, but I'm a Pom. I had only lived in Australia for six months so Anzac Day was still a new thing to me.
He took the time to chat me and explain some things. I admired his uniform and particularly his medals. I forget exactly what he said to me, but he was so modest.
“Oh well, these are only for national service.” Only? ONLY? He served, which is more than most of us have done.
If there is any way you can find a corner in your paper to show him off, to maybe track him or his family, I wonder if he might like a copy of these pictures, which I will gladly frame and send on to him.
Many thanks,
