WENTWORTH LADIES
Results for April 26 event: 18 hole stroke, second monthly medal sponsored by Hogan’s Pharmacy.
Twenty keen ladies turned up to contest our second monthly medal. After nine holes they had managed to survive a light shower of rain and decided at the time that the worst of the weather was gone.
How wrong they were. After 14 holes the weather really turned it on with hail, strong winds, and drenching rain.
But a few keen (or mad) girls managed to finish and their golf wasn’t too bad considering! We played one division on Wednesday and the winner of the monthly medal was Lee Pickett with 84 off the stick net 76.
The other winners were Ruth Bevan with a good nett 82, Val Gregory with nett 85 and Roslyn Fuller. Well done to everyone for turning up, playing, staying and supporting our club.

Pro Tip by John Furze
Bunker shots: The sand wedge has bounce, and bounce is designed to keep the leading edge of the club from hitting the sand first.
In effect, when contacting the sand about two-three inches behind the ball the club will slide underneath the ball pushing the sand and ball out of the bunker and onto the green.
Set-up with a slightly wider stance than normal as this will lower your centre of gravity to enable the club-head to pass into the sand under the ball.
Position the ball towards your left heel with your weight on your left side and make sure that it remains there throughout the entire swing.
Your club-face should be slightly opened but aligned to the flag. Opening the club-face will allow the bounce (bottom of the sand iron) to be used correctly as it is designed to.
Your stance (feet, knees, hips and shoulders) should be aiming in an open position (left) of the flag. It is important the club-face remains open until well after you have contacted the sand.
Keeping your weight on the left side, cock your wrists and swing your hands up just below right shoulder height.
The club-head will be picked up quite steeply which will allow for a steep angle of attack as the clubhead enters the sand about two inches behind the ball. Make sure you keep turning your body through to the finish as this will allow the clubhead to continue through the sand preventing stopping on the shot resulting with the ball staying in the bunker.
