Bulldogs coach Des Hasler doesn't want to risk losing players to injury in a match many clubs deem as irrelevant, but also is conscious of the workload on his players.

The club is concerned about the welfare of its players, who will have to back up four days after the Sunday match in Mudgee for the Bulldogs' round 10 clash against the Cowboys on Thursday night.

The NRL has announced this season will be the final year of the City-Country schedule, but Hasler is not one for sentiment and Bulldogs officials have relayed their concerns to the NRL.

Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle informed the NRL and NSWRL that their players wouldn't be taking part in the match.

"Des is one of those guys that's really supportive of players playing rep football because he did and understands the value of having that experience for players playing rep footy," Castle said.

"But to schedule a game on Sunday when we play on Thursday - and off the back of the Anzac Test - on Friday and Pacific Test on Saturday - a four-day turnaround is just too hard.

"We play the Cowboys, that's a huge game. It's game awe need to win. It's not about us being difficult but we will lose up to five on international duties on Friday and Saturday and potentially three for City-Country."

The NRL will require legitimate reasons for players making themselves unavailable, however that hasn't stopped clubs from withdrawing players for dubious reasons in the past.

NSW coach Laurie Daley has been working with Country coach Craig Fitzgibbon and City coach Brad Fittler to finalise the teams before they head into camp next week.

Experienced and established Origin players such as James Maloney and Josh Jackson won't be required to play in the City-Country match, however players on the verge of selection will get the call up.

The Bulldogs will lose David Klemmer to the Australian team, however Josh Reynolds would have been a chance to be picked in the City team to push his chances for an Origin recall.
