Having had the under 23s concept thrust upon him mid a two-year deal to coach Western, Darren Jackson wasn’t too sure what to think heading into the 2017 country championship campaign.

He’s now pumped up tighter than a beach ball at the thought of it.
Western’s side will be made up, predominantly, of players from both the Group 11 and Group 10 outfits that played out an enthralling 26-24 result, in favour of the red and blacks.
On top of selection locks like Ben Maguire and Sam Dwyer, a host of young guns put up their hands for a spot in the squad, namely Group 11 prop Lee Price and Group 10 backrower Rakai Tuheke, both earning praise from Jackson post game.
The former Western and Country NSW rake said he’s likely to finalise his side this weekend in a bid to get the Rams’ preparation for a round one clash with Monaro, at Cowra on May 13, down pat.
He’s thrilled with the display both Group 10 and 11 put on at Parkes’ Jock Colley Field.
“I think it’s how group clashes should be,” he said.
“It came down to the wire, only two points separating the teams and very rewarding from our point of view.
“They put their bodies on the line and there were a few Bathurst guys backing up from a game the night before.
“There’s a lot to take out of it and we’ve got the task to pick the team now.”
Both Kavanaghs, Lincoln and hooker Wade, also pressed their claims for a Rams jumper, while Lithgow fullback Keelan Bresac should be seriously considered for a wing spot. He was sensational at fullback for Group 10.
The Betts boys, Jedd and Jake, also caught the eye of Jackson.
The coach said he will pick a 22-man squad to contend with future injury and suspension.
The team will train at Manildra on Saturday before a bonding and training session at Lake Burrendong the following weekend.
