“Anson Street School already has a well-established physiotherapy service run by Jennie Kempson, along with both speech pathology and occupational therapy services, but there is always scope for additional hours,” explained physiotherapy lecturer Kay Skinner.
“This placement enables us to provide additional assessments and interventions beyond those able to be delivered by Jennie, so it is a win-win situation for the university, the students and staff at Anson Street School.”
Final year physiotherapy students report the placement is a wonderful learning experience and a lot of fun.
For many students, it is the first time they have worked with people with a disability and it can result in a change of attitude towards work in this field.
“Being part of the Anson Street School team and working with the students, teachers and aides for five weeks has been an amazing experience.
Seeing the kids achieve both big and small goals, through their persistence and determination, has definitely encouraged me to consider this area of physiotherapy in the future,” said fourth year student, Meggan.
“The main thing I took away from this placement was never taking the small wins for granted. As a physiotherapist we are so used to achieving significant goals in relatively short periods. So I learnt that even the smallest improvements made the world of difference to each child. I couldn’t recommend this placement more highly,” added fellow student, Tekarie.
