Acting station officer Dane Philippe said smoke alarms saved lives every day.
“They will alert occupants to a fire at any stage especially during sleeping hours,” Mr Philippe said.
“They can alert neighbours to an issue even during daylight times.”
To test your smoke alarms, press and hold the test button for five seconds.
It is recommended that homeowners or landlords replace batteries every 12 months if the smoke alarm is a standard battery powered type.
It is also important to vacuum and dust off alarms every six months and replace smoke alarms every 10 years or earlier if specified by the manufacturer.
You are breaking the law if you do not have a working smoke alarm.
Fire and Rescue NSW recommends photoelectric smoke alarms.
Daylight saving ends at 2am on Sunday.
