There are currently six multicultural restaurants, a bakery, a cultural centre and a shop between Peisley Street and McNamara Street with another, Vietnamese, restaurant planned for the block.

Orange Chinese Cultural Centre spokesman Dong Liu said branding the block as Orange’s Little Asia would attract more tourists.

“This could benefit Orange a lot,” he said.

“If there were more multicultural restaurants it will attract more people to Orange.

“They will come for Asian food in the area.

“It would be an interesting spot for tourists.”

Sales and marketing manager John Cui said that while there were only about 100 Chinese people in Orange the community had a rich history and culture that could be displayed to locals and tourists.

Mr Cui said the centre, which is based in the Summer Street block, already provided Chinese classes in dumpling making, calligraphy, kung-fu martial arts.

Mr Lim Korean & Chinese restaurant owner Semin Jeon said Orange was already a top destination for food and wine and an Asian hub would develop that further.

He also operates the Sushi King Japanese restaurant on the opposite side of the road and said he believed the block had a lot of potential to be developed.

“It is in a good position, there are all the pubs just here,” he said.

“People are craving about good food.”

Mr Jeon said he would like to see more FOOD Week festival events at the eastern end of Orange.

They could develop alongside an Asian hub.

FOOD Week president James Sweetapple applauded the Little Asia hub proposal.

“I think it’s a brilliant idea,” he said.

“Absolutely, that would be fantastic.”

Mr Sweetapple said such a hub could provide unique events for future FOOD Week festivals.

He said restaurants in close proximity and with similar cuisines should work together.

“The smart people get involved,” he said.

Worldly Treasures shop owner Giuliana Ryan said an Asian centre would be good for her business.

“We’d certainly support that. It would help grow the business and give us bit more exposure,” she said.
