Thanks to a ton from Marcus Harris (120), who combined with Travis Dean (94) in a 224-run first wicket stand, the Vics were 6-442 at time of print on Monday afternoon, with Tremain next to bat, which coincided with tea on the second afternoon.
Rob Quiney (48), Aaron Finch (38), Seb Gotch (40 not out) and James Pattinson (49 not out) had all contributed as well, with Chadd Sayers (4-79) the best of the Redbacks’ bowlers.
The opening day was an ordinary one for the Redbacks though, Harris and Dean were only allowed to make the potentially match-winning start by a number of missed South Australian chances.
Harris dished up the simplest of slips catches when he was on 54 but it was shelled, as was the tough chance he slashed away through the gully on 59.
Dean was dropped in the gully in between those two chances, with all three opportunities coming in the space of six overs.
The Redbacks missed a run out opportunity not long after, when Harris took a tight single to mid-off with the score on 116 – in fact, he was on toast with a direct hit.
But the pair went on to add more than 100 before Dean was bowled around his legs by South Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa (1-156).
