The red and blacks were outrighted by Cavaliers in first grade in the last round and missed out as a result, while Centrals’ second grade side finished sixth of seven.
“It is disappointing, of course, we thought we had good enough sides in firsts and seconds to make it but it didn’t work out that way,” Kennewell lamented.
“We all enjoyed it though, that’s the main thing. We’re looking at building to having a third grade side next summer. A bit more success would’ve made that easier to draw some more players, but we’re confident it will happen.
“The aim is to come back bigger and better next year.”
Kennewell put his side’s elimination from the post-season race down to a lack of application with the bat, which allowed Cavaliers to claim an outright win by an innings and 11 runs.
“We definitely didn’t bat as well as we should have in that game,” he said.
“But Cavaliers bowled well and they deserve plenty of credit, they’ll be hard to beat in the finals.”
Kennewell enjoyed a breakout year, which resulted in him claiming 35 wickets across the regular competition and Royal Hotel Cup and also taking the reins for Orange’s representative side, and he is an undeniable chance to claim the ODCA’s cricketer of the year as a result.
He couldn’t have been more pleased with his own performance and said as long as he’s running around, he’ll be looking to guide Centrals’ younger players through the ranks.
“[The captaincy] is something that’s always up for grabs if anyone wants to do the job, but I’ll definitely put my hat in the ring next summer,” he said.
“I really enjoyed doing it this summer and I think I’ve still got a good five or six seasons left in me, so I’ll nominate for it as long as I’m enjoying it.”
The ODCA finals start this weekend.
