But Dubbo has beaten us to the punch, not only fitting out their own outdoor cinema but announcing a line-up of classic movies to play in just over a month’s time when the facility is re-launched.
The drive-in project, a partnership between Dubbo City Youth Council and Dubbo Regional Council, will see the projector at the city’s old drive-in on the Mitchell Highway flicked on for the first time in three decades.
The movies on offer will take a step back in time and offer a number of genres, including a horror night.
The opening will kick off on Friday, April 7 with Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) starring Gene Wilder.
The second movie of the night will be Top Gun (1986), starring Tom Cruise.
On Saturday, April 8 the first session will be Grease, the 1978 film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
And everyone will be set for the time of their life when Dirty Dancing shows in the second session. The 1987 movie stars Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze.
Finally, the Sunday night horror movie will be A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), starring Robert Englund and a young Johnny Depp.
Each movie will be ticketed separately, with tickets available from Friday at 9am for $35 per car (plus booking fees) at www.123tix.com.au.
