Almost a dozen kids turned out last week to be put through their paces by Furze and junior club captain Sam Pasquali, who employed the latest in junior coaching technology – the Starting New At Golf, or SNAG, system.
“We’ve already got more kids registered for [Thursday’s second] clinic and last week’s was really good,” Furze said.
He went on to explain what he and Pasquali took the up-and-comers through last week, the program will be similar in the next two clinics.
“We invested in the SNAG technology and it’s been really good for teaching beginners,” Furze said.
“It’s basically a lot bigger gear with velcro targets and tennis balls and really big clubheads, so it makes it easier for the kids to hit the ball when they’re starting out.
“We get them on the driving range to start with and go through the fundamentals and the basics, have a barbecue for lunch and then go out and play a few holes out on the course, have a few little competitions, some putting competitions and a bit of a prize presentation as well.
“The kids really enjoyed it last week, it was a great learning day for everyone involved so we’re looking forward to the next two.
“I think we’ll have about 15 or 20 (for both the second and third clinics).”
Duntryleague’s next clinic is on Thursday before the third and final one on Friday, January 27.
Furze said the club will also be hosting a Come And Try Day on Sunday, January 22, which Furze said anyone is welcome to attend.
“We’ll be using the SNAG gear again for that one out on the lawn in front of the clubhouse, the big clear area,” Furze said.
“It’s primarily aimed at junior starting out but anyone who wants to give golf a try is welcome to come along.”
As well as teaching the fundamentals to beginners, Furze said the clinics and Come And Try Day are as much about promoting golf in general around the Orange region.
“It is, we’re really focusing on promoting junior golf and getting more people involved in the game,” he said.
The clinics run from 10am-2pm and cost $35 per day.
The cost includes a barbecue lunch, the clinics are suitable for kids aged seven up to 16.
