FOR around 10 years Helen Corby phoned unsuspecting volunteers to let them know they were nominated for an Australia Day’s Orange Citizen of the Year award.
This year the former Australia Day committee president and committee member was on the receiving end of such a call.
Mrs Corby said she felt thrilled and humbled by the nomination.
“I’ve had the privilege of reading lots of resumes and knowing all of the wonderful volunteers we have in Orange,” Mrs Corby said.
“To think someone would take the time to nominate me, that was quite a shock.
“I don’t know who nominated me.
“They have to go to quite a lot of trouble getting all of the details so I thank them very much.”
Mrs Corby has had an extensive volunteering career over many years.
She has been involved with Can Assist as a treasurer, the Orange Evening View Club as president and a member and with the Half Way House at Duntryleague Golf Club.
She has also been the primary carer for her mother and husband John.
Mrs Corby said she looked forward to the Australia Day celebrations in Cook Park.
“To be nominated is just fabulous and I’m very proud,” she said.
“Whether I’m a winner or a loser, it doesn’t matter because I’m there and part of the activities on Australia.”
“I love Orange, I think it’s a beautiful city and there’s so many opportunities here.”
