Euan will be presenting a floortalk at 2pm with master printmaker Michael Kempson, followed by the opening at 2.30pm.
The gallery has had a long association with Euan Macleod and Gavin Wilson – the curator of this exhibition.
Wilson has put together many memorable exhibitions and publications in Australia, informing and shaping our cultural appreciation and understanding.
Readers may recall the exhibition “Country and Western: Landscape Re-imagined” earlier this year or “Cuisine and Country: A Culinary Venture in Australian Art” which was commissioned and toured by Orange Regional Gallery in 2007.
He also curated and produced “The artists of Hill End: art, life and landscape” in 1995 which remains the benchmark publication and exhibition on the subject.
While Euan Macloed is perhaps best known for his paintings, this exhibition is one of the few occasions when the artist’s prints have been presented as a distinct facet of his work and Gavin Wilson made this selection specifically for our Gallery 2 space.
As he writes in the exhibition catalogue:
“The highly expressive, experimental nature of the prints on exhibition complement the artist’s celebrated career as a major painter of our times.
The artist’s rigorous control of line, form and tone underpin his skill in crossing over from painting to printmaking.
The long, successful association with master printmakers Ron McBurnie (Monsoon Press, Townsville), Michael Kempson (Cicada Press, Sydney) and Marian Maguire (Limeworks, Christchurch) attests to a creative collaboration reflecting the vision and talent of all involved.
Ultimately, it is the spontaneity and richness of surface transferred from Macleod’s painting practice that places the body of prints alongside the paintings as fine, poetically-charged works of intrigue and substance.”
“Euan Macloed: Prints 1991 – 2016” runs until 5 February 2017. Entry is free.
A reminder that our school holiday program is now available on our website www.org.nsw.gov.au and at Gallery reception.
