Both Rowing NSW sanctioned events, the Reindeer Regatta features a range of both age and grade events over 1000 and 2000 metres, while the Sprint Championships’ events are all contested over 500 metres.
Ultimately, across both events, Kinross claimed a total of 38 medals – 14 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze as well.
In Saturday’s Reindeer Regatta, primarily against other club competitors, Kinross rowers had won 10 events along with securing 11 silver medals and four third placings.
The most impressive of those rows came from rookies Joshua and Luke Houghton, who produced a massive effort to claim gold in the novice men’s double scull.
On the Sunday – in the context a day of racing of much higher magnitude – Kinross’ uber-talented group claimed four gold medals and sprint championships, finished second in another three events and also took home six bronze medals.
Sally Uttley and Gidget Hall were incredibly impressive, as they have been for some time, in taking home two championship titles.
Uttley and Hall claimed the women’s under-16 double scull and were also a part of Kinross’ winning unit in the women’s under-16 coxed quad scull later on as well.
Cody Kelso was magnificent in his championship title win in the men’s under-16 single scull, while the men’s under-16 coxed quad scull also celebrated a gold medal.
That group cruised to victory in the final, clocking 1.33.44 to win by over three seconds from their nearest competitors.
Kelso finished second in his heat, clocking 1.48.13 to finish less than a second behind the heat winner in St Peters’ Edward Clarkson, before shaving almost seven seconds off that time to clock 1.41.26 in the final, finishing exactly half a second in front of silver medalist Lachlan Barry, of Hunter Valley Grammar.
Newington’s Finn Tainsh was in third spot, while Clarkon was two further back in fifth.
The Reindeer Regatta and NSW Sprint Championships provided an excellent finale to a very successful year of rowing for Kinross.
2016 really laid the foundations for further success in the second of the season in 2017, which based on this year’s results, should maintain Kinross’ place among the absolute elite rowing programs across NSW.
