Mr Barilaro took the state Nationals’ top job after Troy Grant resigned following the Orange byelection.
“Each election is on a knife-edge, I only have to lose 1000 votes and I’m out of my seat,” he said.
“One of the things I have to do is explain tough decisions, plus the direction and vision (of government).”
Mr Barilaro said legislation to repeal the greyhound racing ban would be presented following a report on the industry’s future in December.
“We said we will repeal the legislation and we will honour that,” Mr Barilaro said. “We’re not trying to be tricky, we will still have a greyhound industry.”
He said the reform package for the industry was being led by former NSW Premier Morris Iemma. “The industry itself wants to clean-up, dealing with animal welfare will be front and centre of the industry going forward.”
