THE Beach Boys will be taking a break from Kokomo on Sunday, February 12 in favour of a trip to Orange in one of just three regional concerts.
Wade Park will host the American band’s current line-up of Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, Jeff Foskett, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill, Brian Eichenberger and Scott Totten, and Motown supergroup The Temptations, courtesy of $20,000 injected by Orange City Council.
With Orange’s economy dependent on visitors, mayor John Davis said it was important to diversify Orange’s attractions, with the T20 Big Bash match coming in December.
About 5000 people are expected to attend the concert.
“Number one in negotiations, you’ve got to be prepared to put up a fee – we thought it was reasonable to make sure they come to our area,” Cr Davis said.
“The outcome will be fantastic in regards to the income that’s spent within the city at that time, but also the promotion of Orange and also for our community at large.
“You can have rugby league, you can have rugby union but you’ve also got to be out there promoting a whole range of entertainment.”
Cr Davis said it would be a family day out and set the scene for 2017 after the busy Christmas/New Year period.
“It’s a bit of a celebration, a hell of a good time and I would invite everybody to come out and get dressed up,” he said.
Orange will join Wagga Wagga and Tamworth as the only inland bookings before the band returns to the coast to play in Newcastle and Wollongong.
The event will also feature acts from closer to home and stalls serving Orange’s food and wine.
