That’s the proud forecast Orange winery owner Bill Shrapnel has for a chardonnay he and wife Jane produced that has just snapped up two trophies.

Their 2015 Colmar Estate Single Vineyard Block 1 chardonnay won Best Chardonnay of the Show at the Australian Cool Climate Wine Show last weekend.

It follows a trophy in the Small Winemaker Awards the week before, which is all the more impressive considering the Pinnacle Road winery has only been open for two years.

“This is our seventh [trophy] in our first two years,” Mr Shrapnel said on Tuesday.

“We have surprised ourselves with how well we have gone. To get an award like this is something out of the box.”

He said they grew six varieties on site which was “very high and very cool.”

The winning chardonnay, of which only 105 dozen have been made, will sell for $38 a bottle when it is released as part of the Orange Wine Festival on October 15. It was produced by local winemaker Chris Derrez,

Shrapnel said: “This is the pick of the crop in a very good year. It’s a lovely elegant chardonnay, it’s quite fine but very intense in its flavours. It will age very well. This one is just built for ageing.”

He said the 2015 vintage had benefited from a cool summer and even rainfall which allowed the grapes to develop without stress.

The tree-changing couple, Bill’s a nutritionist and Jane’s a nurse, moved to Orange from Sydney to follow their dream of owning a winery.

It was a double victory for Orange at the cool climate show as the best wine of the show was produced from fruit sourced from Orange.

Murrumbateman winemaker Ken Helm’s 2016 Helm Wines Central Ranges riesling used Orange fruit after severe frost wiped out 85 percent of his estate grapes.

“It is wonderful that these trophies recognise the high quality of Orange fruit and our skills with riesling, not just from the Canberra district.”

The grapes came from a vineyard between Orange and Canowindra.
