Orange CYMS shrugged off the disappointment of watching their under-18 side bow out of the competition to produce a controlled, composed performance and keep their aspirations of a Group 10 first division three-peat alive on Sunday.

The green and golds, coming off an error-ridden loss to Bathurst Panthers in last week’s major semi-final, regained their poise to down Bathurst St Pat’s 26-16 in Sunday’s preliminary final at Carrington Park, warding off a mini-comeback late in the game as well.
With CYMS leading 20-6 late in the second half St Pat’s scored a converted try to bring it back to an eight-point ball game at 20-12. The Saints were threatening a boilover but CYMS held strong and scored a try of their own to seal the win.
The win gives CYMS another crack at Panthers in this weekend’s grand final at Wade Park, while the Saints’ season is over.
Jared Colling scored first for St Pat’s, Tony Clevin’s goal made it 6-0 but CYMS hit back immediately with an unconverted Adam Stanford try, before Des Knight barged his way over too. Steve Lane added the extras, giving CYMS a 10-6 lead at half-time.
Matt Morris and James Angus scored for CYMS after the break before Collins gave Pat’s a sniff, but Morgan Assie’s try sealed the win for CYMS. St Pat’s scored a consolation try on full-time.
Lithgow Workies handed Orange CYMS their second straight post-season loss in Sunday’s Group 10 under-18 preliminary final at Carrington Park, trumping the green and golds 18-14.
Combined with their major semi-final defeat to Mudgee the week before, Sunday’s four-point loss bounces the minor premiership-winning CYMS out of the 2016 title race in straight sets.
It’s a bitterly disappointing result for CYMS. The only two losses the side suffered all year were in the two games that mattered the most.
Sunday’s game was a nail-biter, after going into the sheds locked at 6-6 a Toby Westcott try and conversion gave CYMS a 12-6 lead, then he kicked a penalty to make it 14-6 with 13 to go.
Workies stormed home though, scoring two late, converted tries to steal a four-point victory and win through to next week’s grand final.
Blayney scored the upset of the season in Sunday’s Group 10 league tag preliminary final, holding on to claim a two-point win over minor premiers Bathurst Panthers.
Gabriella Calub scored early and Liv Bird converted to give the Bearettes a 6-0 lead, they kept it until after half-time. Hayley Cheney scored for Panthers just after the break, but the conversion attempt was waved away and Blayney held to win 6-4.
