DUNTRYLEAGUE has dominated the Bathurst Junior Golf Open with Josh Carpenter and Chloe McCarthy taking out the boys’ and girls titles’ respectively on Sunday.
Not only did the Orange club take out the major titles but they had several other winners with Brandon Connolly finishing as the overall runner-up and taking the 15 years and over scratch title, while James Conran was the 14 years and under scratch winner.
In addition, Conran took out one of the nearest the pin titles and McCarthy had the longest girls’ drive.
A field of 35 took to the Bathurst Golf Club course with players coming from across the region including Kandos, Condobolin, Dubbo, Forbes and Mudgee, as well as Bathurst and Orange.
It certainly wasn’t anywhere near a record participation for the event but compared to the size of fields at other tournaments this year, organisers were satisfied with the turnout.
Carpenter posted a scratch round of 76, one shot ahead of Connolly and three ahead of Bathurst’s Dylan Thompson.
“It’s good to come down and get a win. I haven’t played too much in the last two years,” Carpenter said.
“This is my first event this year so I wasn’t really expecting anything. I just came for a game but it’s the last year that I am eligible for this one so it’s nice to get a win.
“I’m going to get back into it now, start playing every week.”
It was also a maiden win in Bathurst for McCarthy, who shot 80, but the 16-year-old has been in outstanding form this year, winning the 16 years girls’ nett division at the Subaru State Age Classic at Coffs Harbour and a junior tournament outright at Eastlakes Golf Club.
“I was really happy with the way I played,” she said.
“I play here every year and I play the Jack Newton Peter O’Malley but this is my first win here.
“I’d been a bit off my game for a couple of weeks but I’ve picked up a lot this week. I’d been practising pretty hard.”
