It was Ekert’s Saints who suffered a surprise 3-2 loss at the hands of Zig Zag in the first week of finals.
It was a result which ended the hopes Ekert and his fellow Saints had of defending the premiership they won in 2015.
It also moved Zig Zag within one win of making the premier league grand final. The Lithgow outfit will meet Souths in this Saturday’s preliminary final.
“Zig Zag are a good side and a great bunch of guys, you can’t take anything away from them,” Ekert said.
“They do have another upset in them, for sure. I really thought they were a top two side this year with the personnel they have got and especially with the leadership of Ben Kelly.
“He is second to none and I tell you what, I will jump on their bandwagon.”
As for his side, Ekert felt Pat’s should have earned a major semi-final spot instead of lining up in last Saturday’s elimination match.
“You lose four points at the start of the year, you draw three games you shouldn’t have drawn – we shouldn’t have been in this game,” he said. “But unfortunately we were and unfortunately we are out. That is sport, someone has to win and someone has to lose.”
