He and his fellow Saints walked off the turf for the final time in the 2016 men’s Premier League Hockey competition as they lost 3-2.
The defending premiers had come from 3-0 down to make it a one-goal game with 20 minutes to go and though Pat’s created more chances – finishing with a count of nine penalty corners – no-one was able to find a leveller.
“We gave them too much of a start. They scored two really good goals off short corners and short corners these days are so critical,” co-captain Ekert said.
“We had our chances, Riley [Hanrahan] had a nice tomahawk shot but it was a tough angle and he just couldn’t get it around.
“A loss is a loss, we’ve had some really young kids come through this year, so that is a positive, and to be where we were was a positive.”
